Seasonal seismic activity on Mars

نویسندگان

چکیده

The rate of occurrence High Frequency (HF) marsquakes, as recorded by InSight at Homestead Hollow, Elysium Planitia, increased after about LS=33∘, and ceased almost completely LS=187∘, following an apparently seasonal variation with a peak near aphelion. We define seismic models based on the declination Sun, annual solar tides, CO2 cycle measured atmospheric pressure. Evaluation Akaike weights evidence ratios shows that Sun is most likely, least likely driver this activity, although discrimination weak, few events in August 2020 favor for triggering ice load. also show no periodicity related to Phobos' orbit present HF event sequence. Event forecasts are presented allow further candidate mechanisms from future observations.

Impact - generated seismic signals on Mars

Meteorite impacts will be a key seismic source for probing Mars’ interior during the InSight mission. Maximising data exploitation requires a good understanding of impact-generated seismic ground motions (waves), which has been limited by a lack of observational data and the practical difficulty of replicating relevant martian impact conditions in experiments. The aim of this PhD project is to ...

Seasonal variations of snow depth on Mars.

Using topography collected over one martian year from the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter on the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) spacecraft, we have measured temporal changes in the elevation of the martian surface that correlate with the seasonal cycle of carbon dioxide exchange between the surface and atmosphere. The greatest elevation change (1.5 to 2 meters) occurs at high latitudes ( above 80 degr...

Estimates of seismic activity in the Cerberus Fossae region of Mars

[1] The 2016 NASA InSight lander is the first planetary mission designed to study the deep interior of Mars. InSight’s Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure (SEIS) package will quantify global and regional seismic activity and determine parameters like core properties, mantle composition, and Martian lithospheric thickness. An improved understanding of the location, magnitude, and frequency...

Impact-induced hydrothermal activity on early Mars

[1] We report on numerical modeling results of postimpact cooling of craters with diameters of 30, 100, and 180 km in an early Martian environment, with and without the presence of water. The effects of several variables, such as ground permeability and the presence of a crater lake, were tested. Host rock permeability is the main factor affecting fluid circulation and lifetimes of hydrothermal...

3 Seismic Activity

The Tucunduba Dam is about 290 km West of Fortaleza, Ceará state. The seismic monitoring of the area, with a local network, has began on June 11, 1997, soon after the occurrence of the event with magnitude 3.2 mb on June 09, 1997. The monitoring was done with one the analogical station (used for magnitude duration measurement and statistical control activity) and seven digital stations. The dig...
